  5.   This technote describes how you can access one of Quarterdeck's
  6. 24 hour electronic Technical Support services.  But first, a
  7. little background information.
  8.  
  9.   SmartNet is a network of individual Bulletin Board Systems
  10. (BBS) that exchange messages, questions, answers, and files on a
  11. daily basis.  The SmartNet Network is not like the Local Area
  12. Networks (LANs) that you may be familiar with.  SmartNet is
  13. currently a three-level network.
  14.  
  15.   The International/Administrative Host system of the SmartNet is
  16. The Sound of Music BBS (SOM).  The Sound of Music Bulletin Board
  17. System (SOM) is a system that brings the very latest technologies
  18. to the telecomputing world.  SOM has grown to supporting over 1.5
  19. GIGABYTES of online resources including over 10,000 files
  20. available for subscribers of the Sound of Music BBS.
  21.  
  22.   Regional Systems call The Sound of Music every night to
  23. exchange any new information or messages that may have been
  24. received during the day.  There are several regional hubs; each
  25. in addition to exchanging information with SOM also exchanges
  26. information with smaller, individual Bulletin Boards.  The
  27. regional hubs usually have large user bases.  These systems
  28. usually have several incoming lines and require a paid
  29. subscription for full access.
  30.  
  31.   Individual bulletin board systems call the closest regional hub
  32. to exchange messages and information that has been received
  33. during the day.  Most of them have only one or two incoming lines
  34. and many times do not charge subscription fees for access.
  35.  
  36.   By using this method of exchanging messages and information, a
  37. message left on any one of the BBSes on the network is received
  38. by everyone of the BBSes on the network within days.  It also
  39. allows Quarterdeck Technical Support to call one system,
  40. currently The Sound of Music, and reach hundreds of users with
  41. technical bulletins, upgrade information and answers to technical
  42. support questions.
  43.  
  44.   The DESQview product support conference discusses DESQview,
  45. QEMM-386, QEMM-50/60, QRAM, Manifest, and the API programing
  46. interface to DESQview.  
  47.  
  48.   Quarterdeck is not the only company that uses SmartNet as an
  49. avenue for technical support.  Many hardware manufacturers and
  50. software publishers (both commercial and shareware/Public Domain)
  51. provide support on SmartNet.
  52.  
  53.   SmartNet is such a good resource for computer users that BYTE
  54. magazine wrote of Smartnet and the Sound of Music BBS is a "major
  55. national bbs network and system".  The Sound of Music Bulletin
  56. Board System (SOM) is the system that Quarterdeck uses to
  57. distribute its information on SmartNet.  This information is sent
  58. to any SmartNet node that carries the DESQview product support
  59. conference.
  60.  
  61.   Although you may prefer to contact one of the participating
  62. SmartNet nodes in your area, the following is subscription
  63. information for The Sound of Music BBS:
  64.  
  65.   There are presently two FREE PUBLIC ACCESS NODES to the Sound
  66. of Music BBS which can be accessed at (516) 536-8723.  Public
  67. access limits downloading to the first 90 days online. 
  68. Thereafter, the trial user is expected to subscribe to the Sound
  69. of Music BBS in one of several categories defined below.  These
  70. public nodes are available for accessing all of the conferences
  71. of the system.  Many features of the system are only available to
  72. subscribers of the system.  The public nodes only support
  73. 1200/2400 bps modems.  9600 bps is only available on subscriber
  74. nodes.
  75.  
  76.   FULL YEAR SUBSCRIPTION: $50.00/calendar year with full access
  77. to all forums, doors, conferences and file directories with NO
  78. restrictions to number of files downloaded with a 1 megabyte
  79. daily download limit and a daily online limitation of 3 hours per
  80. day.
  81.  
  82.   TRIAL 90 SUBSCRIPTION: $25.00/90 day period with full access to
  83. all forums, doors, conferences and a file directories with a
  84. daily byte limitation of 500,000 bytes/day and a daily online
  85. time of 40 minutes.
